Empire State of Mind: East Coast Rap

The Golden Era of Rap (1980s to the 1990s) is long gone. However, there are still remnants this day that bring a certain level of hope in those wishing to get back to those times. The underground rap circuit in the NYC area is starting to flourish yet again. The South is the dominant force in mainstream rap these days, but NYC is starting to build their buzz back.

However, there are some great things happening in NYC. The underground buzz is coming in full effect with rappers like ASAP Rocky, Fred The Godson, Nitty Scott, MC amongst others.Never heard of this before? Get up to speed here. Additionally, we are seeing movements come back with the LOX’s new album coming out for a 2012-2013 release. The Diplomats are back together working with producers like Dr. Dre. Nas is going back into his old ways with a new school twist. His album “Life is Good” is slated for a July release date. Additionally, people like Jay-Z continue to move the culture not only in the sense of building brands, creating new ways of monetize, but elevating rap. He’s bringing a new vibe with producer and rapper, Kanye West. As well as developing newer artists and talent across the globe.
